Media Advisory: NDA’s LLWR and Dounreay Contract Decision

LLWR

GERMANTOWN, Md.; July 10, 2020 – The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) announced their decision to terminate for convenience the Low-Level Waste Repository (LLWR) and Dounreay Parent Body (PBO) M&O contracts.

Amentum is a member of both PBO contracts. The LLWR contract will have a 12-month transition period concluding July 2021 and the Dounreay contract will have a 9-month transition concluding March 2021.

The United Kingdom Nuclear Waste Management (UKNWM) is the PBO responsible for the management and operations of LLWR and the consortium is comprised of Amentum, Studsvik, and Orano. The Cavendish Dounreay Partnership (CDP) is the PBO responsible for the management and operations at the Dounreay Site and the consortium is comprised of Cavendish Nuclear, Jacobs and Amentum.

“We understand this decision as the NDA customer has been moving in this direction to integrate their enterprise for many years,” said John Vollmer, Chief Executive Officer of Amentum. “We have stood shoulder to shoulder in partnership with the NDA to achieve many milestones at both LLWR and Dounreay. We are proud of our team’s accomplishments and we will ensure a smooth and safe transition at both sites.”

LLWR has delivered clear benefits for the UK low-level radioactive waste decommissioning mission averting the requirement for a second Low-Level Waste Repository (avoiding over £2 billion in costs) and securing more than £400M savings due to Amentum led waste management and diversion, transforming the way the nuclear industry manages its radioactive low-level waste. At Dounreay, they removed the site’s highest hazards and opened new permanent disposal facilities that will house low-level waste going forward.

“Our teams have done a tremendous job in supporting the NDA customer and delivering for the UK taxpayer,” said Mark Whitney, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Nuclear and Environment for Amentum. “While the NDA’s strategy is to move away from PBO contracts across its estate, we plan to remain active in supporting the NDA’s critical mission via other contracting models. Our plans for growth in the UK nuclear market have not changed.”

David Batters, Senior Vice President, Amentum Nuclear and Environment, noted “the decision is in line with NDA strategy” and reflected on the excellent achievements of the Amentum teams as part of the PBOs, which has resulted in significant benefit to the UK taxpayer and set a benchmark in management of nuclear waste and special nuclear materials. “Amentum will continue to work with passion and purpose to help the NDA during the transition and look forward to bringing our experience and expertise to the NDA estate in the future.’’
