At Amentum, we celebrate our people, our cultures, and we recognize the value of diversity and inclusion. In March, we’ll focus on Women’s History Month while shining a light on one employee at a time. Today’s Q&A is with Brianna Burnell, Vice President, Contracts, Corporate/Critical Missions.
How did you come to join Amentum?
I was fortunate to have a life-long friend who recognized my background in contracting and referred me to AECOM back in 2011. It was a pivotal moment in my career journey, and I am grateful for the network and connections that I have established through this organization.
What is your professional and personal background?
I was born and raised in Virginia. I pursued my undergraduate studies at James Madison University and obtained my law degree from Florida State University. Since joining the company in 2011, I’ve relished advancing in my career and being a part of the remarkable growth of our business. Personally, I reside in Fredericksburg, VA, with my husband and our delightful 9-year-old son. Balancing a successful career with the joys of family life has been both challenging and immensely rewarding.
Describe the work you do and how you think it makes a positive impact.
Working at Amentum, especially in contracts management for a major government contractor, is deeply fulfilling. Our efforts directly bolster key initiatives of the U.S. Government, particularly in assisting the military and various agencies. Being aware that my contributions aid in the success of vital missions globally, serving both Government and Commercial clients, brings me immense pride.
What are some of your accomplishments and/or what has been your proudest career moment?
Undoubtedly, my proudest career moment occurred when I took on the position of Head of Contracts at Amentum in December 2022. It marked a culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and trust bestowed upon me by the organization.
What do you enjoy about working for Amentum?
The significance of our mission is what I cherish the most as it is both challenging and fulfilling. Moreover, the camaraderie and collaboration with the exceptional individuals working at Amentum, who make a substantial impact on countless lives through their work, is truly inspiring.
What are you passionate about?
My passion extends to two core aspects of my life – my family and the success of the company. Striking a balance between personal and professional aspirations is crucial, and I find great fulfillment in excelling in both realms.
What’s your career advice?
My advice is simple: never underestimate your capabilities. Take risks, invest in yourself, and be transparent with your abilities. Embrace criticism as an opportunity to grow and never blame others for setbacks. Accountability and continuous self-improvement are keys to a successful career.
What does safety mean to you or do you have a favorite safety tip?
Safety is paramount in both my personal and professional life. By prioritizing safety and carefully assessing risks, even the most challenging and dangerous tasks can be executed securely.
What’s the best invention in the world and why?
Without a doubt, computers take the crown for being the best invention. They empower society and individuals, providing unprecedented efficiency and productivity. The ability to access information at our fingertips, thanks to computers and the internet, has revolutionized how we live and work.
Anything else you would like to share from a personal or professional perspective?
On a personal note, I have become an avid fan of Formula 1 racing over the last several years, with Red Bull being my favorite team. In 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Canadian Grand Prix with my family which was an amazing experience.
Considering this monthly observance, tell us more about yourself.
What’s your favorite book?
It is hard to choose a favorite book because there are so many that I have loved. One of my favorite book series is Harry Potter because I enjoyed reading all the books as they were released and then seeing the characters come to life in film. Now, years later, I get to enjoy reading the books with my son who is also a huge Harry Potter fan.
Favorite film?
My favorite film has to be the Wizard of Oz. Beyond its cinematic brilliance, it holds a special place in my heart as it brings back childhood memories of watching it with my dad. He has been a profound inspiration in my life, attending every important event, offering unwavering support, and continuing to provide the best advice which has shaped who I am today.
