An Armed Forces Day Message from Amentum CEO John Vollmer

Each May, we celebrate Military Appreciation Month and before summer officially kicks off over Memorial Day weekend, we commemorate all members of our armed forces who are currently serving our country on Armed Forces Day – this year on Saturday, May 16.

The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated in 1950 after President Harry S. Truman established the holiday to replace individual service days following the standup of a unified Department of Defense. In the first Armed Forces Day proclamation, President Truman said, “I call upon my fellow citizens to display the flag of the United States at their homes on Armed Forces Day and to participate in exercises expressive of our recognition of the skill, gallantry, and uncompromising devotion to duty characteristic of the Armed Forces in the carrying out of their missions.”

In recent years, we have typically celebrated with parades, receptions, and airshows across the country, thanking all of those who serve our nation in the military services. Although this year will be different, I’m certain we’ll find new and innovative ways to thank military service members for all they do. Even though we won’t see them at a local parade or picnic, we are no less grateful for the sacrifices they make to preserve our freedoms. Please join me in thanking Amentum’s military families, many military customers, partners, and neighbors for their service to our nation.
