Ground Systems Matter—Mark Henrie Talks Space Tech with The DownLink

This week on The DownLink, host Laura Winter explored the essential role of ground systems in modern space defense architecture during an in-depth conversation with Mark Henrie of Amentum. Ground systems, though often overlooked, are vital for supporting space capabilities and defense systems.
Henrie, drawing on his extensive experience at the Missile Defense Agency (MDA), outlined Amentum’s contributions to MDA’s Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) efforts, IT operations, and facility sustainment at Schriever Space Force Base. He also highlighted the seamless cultural and technical integration with Jacobs CMS, demonstrating the strength of their collaboration.
The discussion delved into MDA’s integrated master test plan, which relies on simulated hardware and software testing on the ground before advancing to full flight tests. These simulations allow the systems to operate as though they were live, emphasizing the importance of precision during this critical stage.
Mark also unpacked the Golden Dome Executive Order, emphasizing its national security implications and its impact on space defense initiatives. Amentum has responded by driving innovation in platform-as-a-service models for space enterprise architecture, enabling advanced missile detection capabilities, including in the boost phase, contingent on sensor advancements.
Looking ahead, Mark previewed ongoing projects and procurement discussions tied to Golden Dome, with attention turning to future developments at the Next Generation Missile Defense Summit in Huntsville.
If you’ve ever wondered how the U.S. keeps its edge in space and missile defense—or why “every space capability needs a ground system”—this conversation is for you.
